One of my small accomplishments in life is staying at every Moxy hotel in Manhattan. From the Times Square location (spooky dioramas in the room and views of the air shaft) and Chelsea (interesting words on the shower tiles, short walk to great Korean food) to the East Village (my favorite) and more, Moxy is my You can count on me to stay there whenever I’m in New York.
It’s no surprise to me that TPG chose Moxy as the Best Affordable Hotel Brand of 2024. The staff was always friendly, the rooms were quiet, the beds were comfortable, and the lobby was full of kids.
Given that Moxy’s image is that it’s a spot for hip 20- to 30-somethings looking for a place to calm down when exploring a destination, the family we met at various Moxy hotels in New York I was always surprised by how many people I had with me. So when a new Moxy opened this summer in my family’s favorite vacation destination, Virginia Beach, I not only wanted to check out the new location, but I also took my husband and two kids to see these Moxy families. I thought I’d have a chance to see how it turned out. They were making the stay work.
What is Moxy Hotel Virginia Beach Oceanfront?
Moxy is a hotel brand that strives to balance efficiency and style. Moxy rooms tend to be compact, slightly nautical in design, with every inch of space utilized. They also tend to be stylish, often have a minimalist, bohemian feel, and are fairly affordable.
Moxy Virginia Beach is a large oceanfront hotel located on the boardwalk near the south end of the beach. Several mini-golf courses and the Virginia Beach Fishing Pier are within walking distance. As for location, it’s a good place Explore what Virginia Beach has to offer. There are also plenty of bars and clubs nearby, probably for people closer to Moxy’s target audience (i.e. people who aren’t traveling with elementary school kids).
How to make a reservation at Moxy Hotel Virginia Beach Oceanfront
He booked a queen-sized four-bunk room because it seemed the most family-friendly. If he has four beds, he won’t have to listen to the kids complain about sharing one. Hey, he and I can each have our own beds. Unfortunately, connecting rooms are rare in Moxy properties, and most do not. If you want to keep your kids close, Moxy’s 4-bed room is perfect for you.

A wonderful arrival at Moxy Virginia Beach Oceanfront
Checking into Moxy Virginia Beach Oceanfront is literally a wonderful experience. Not only is valet parking $11 per day for him (most establishments in Virginia Beach charge more than $20 per day for parking), but the friendly reception team has a big smile and a big bottle of Skittles. We will welcome you at The kids each had a cup of Skittles, and my husband and I each received a coupon for a drink at the relaxed lobby bar, which doubles as the front desk.
There were beach chairs, TVs, and games around the lobby. There was also a snack pantry for a fee that included wine, beer, and canned cocktails. The entire area is almost completely glass, offering great views of the boardwalk and beach, as well as easy access to the hotel’s pool, which is unusual for a Moxy. There was also a small outdoor terrace with seating and lawn games.

The real test of Moxy’s family friendliness was the room. Our house was long and narrow with a balcony overlooking the beach. On one side of the room was the bathroom, sink, and bed, and on the other side was Moxy’s signature peg rail, folding table and chair, and TV. My kids were obsessed with the rotary phone in the room. They called it “a 1900’s thing,” but to me, being a product of the 1900’s myself, it didn’t feel old at all.
The design of the room followed Moxy’s typical minimalist style, giving it a beachy feel. The room was bright and airy compared to typical Moxy properties. Most Moxy beds have a white duvet and a few other soft goods inside. This room had a bed with a white duvet, as well as a striped comforter and a white and blue striped rug. Cushions with beach-themed sayings and hanging lamps with wicker shades create a coastal feel.
There was plenty of room for everyone to sleep, but space to store luggage quickly became an issue. When he stays alone for a few nights at work, he doesn’t have a hard time putting away his clothes. However, with four people staying there, the lack of storage in the room quickly became apparent. Moreover, we were only staying with her for one night.
There were two open storage compartments under the bunk that were deep enough to fit two carry-on suitcases, but they were difficult to access. He also had two drawers, one of which was almost completely occupied by the room’s safe. There were 3 coat hangers on the peg rail, but that was all there was to hang clothes on. A small shelf also hung from the peg rail and was deep enough to place my smartphone, but not useful for anything else.
The storage and smallness of the room really became an issue when getting ready for bed and when everyone needed to change clothes the next morning. We couldn’t get everyone’s belongings out at once, so we ended up taking turns changing clothes, which wasn’t fun.
The highest point of the room was the balcony, large enough for two comfortable chairs and overlooking the promenade and beach. It was also well protected from getting wet by sitting on it when it rained, giving us the rare pleasure of watching a rainstorm hit the beach.
As with most Moxy hotel rooms, the sink was in the sleeping area, and the toilet and shower were separated from the main room by a sliding door. This is also an okay feature when I’m alone, but the sliding door did nothing to reduce noise or smells from the toilet area. Maybe your family is more mature than mine, but listening to everyone’s work at night made it hard for me to settle down for bedtime.
The kids claimed the top bunk, but again, a holdover from the 1900s, I was thankful I didn’t have to climb. The ladders and safety rails to the upper bunks all felt very safe, but I feel for the cleaning staff who have to prepare the beds. If you stay in a bunk room, leave a sizable tip for their trouble.
Once in bed, everyone reported being comfortable. But after a few hours, her husband and I realized the benefit of having four beds instead of hers three. We started sharing with me on the side of the bed adjacent to the wall. When we were both in the bottom bunk, the air quickly became hot and stuffy, so we moved to another bunk and ended the night. This move had the added benefit of not having to crawl on top of my husband when he had to get up at night and no longer banging his head on the top bunk.
Moxy Virginia Beach Oceanfront Amenities
Although the room itself was small for a family, Moxy has many amenities that make being outside the room enjoyable. The pool was small but had plenty of space to lounge and swim. There was also a shuffleboard table in the lobby, and a huge foosball table in the upstairs hangout space. The combination of lobby and outdoor terrace seating makes both spaces comfortable and enjoyable.
The only mistake I saw regarding amenities was the gym. Contains lots of high quality Technogym equipment and overlooks the lobby. However, since it was entirely made of glass, it was quite hot when the afternoon sun hit it. But the real failure was a sign in the gym that read, “Sweat is fat crying.” The sentiment of fat shaming was surprising given Moxy’s overall inclusive and accepting brand positioning.
Dining at Moxy Virginia Beach Oceanfront
My biggest disappointment with the Moxy Virginia Beach Oceanfront was its attached restaurant, Belvedere South Coffee Shop and Diner. Belvedere pays homage to Virginia Beach’s historic diner of the same name, but the similarities end there.
We had breakfast there one morning. The staff were clearly working hard but were completely overwhelmed. Multiple items and requests were missed or forgotten, and I heard similar issues from other tables. The food was also lacking and left a lot to be desired in flavor and texture.
Bar Moxy offers grab-and-go breakfast pastries in the morning and light snacks throughout the day. We didn’t try any of their offerings, but after eating at Belvedere, we wished we had.
Moxy Virginia Beach Oceanfront Accessibility
In addition to accessible rooms, Moxy Virginia Beach Oceanfront also has an accessible pool. Some games and lounge chairs in the lobby may be more difficult to move if other guests don’t get up afterwards. Also, some of the hallways are quite dimly lit, which may be an issue for visually impaired travelers.
Why Moxy Virginia Beach isn’t right for you
- A family of four can easily fit into a four-bunk hotel room, but everyone will need to pack very light.
- The location is close to lots of bars and clubs as well as great family activities.
- The bathroom door is not soundproof or scentproof, so it may not be ideal for a group stay.
- The room is small even if there are only 2 people.
check out
Overall, staying at the Moxy Virginia Beach Oceanfront with my family did nothing to diminish my enthusiasm for the brand (I’m still staying at the Moxy as I put the final touches on this review) . However, while everyone could sleep comfortably in his four-bunk room at Moxie, storing all your luggage and not being on top of each other while doing things other than sleeping is another story. did.
For my family, a one night stay was enough. I have to think all the families you see at the various Moxy hotels around Manhattan are much, much closer than my family. That being said, if I were going on a solo trip to the beach or just with my husband, Moxy Virginia Beach Oceanfront would be high on my list of places to stay.
