Canada is experiencing rising unemployment and a housing crisis. In light of this situation, Canada’s Immigration Minister Mark Miller said the country would consider the possibility of capping the number of international students living in the country in the coming months. CTV News report.

However, the government did not specify the extent of the cuts to the immigration system. Mark Miller said a cap on international students would not be a “one-size-fits-all solution”.

“This is a conversation that the federal government needs to have with state governments to ensure that states that are out of work can actually suppress their numbers on a pure volume basis,” Mark Miller told the magazine. ” he said.
“The numbers are disconcerting. It’s really a system that has gotten out of control,” he said, referring to the number of international students in Canada. The Liberal Party aims to attract 485,000 immigrants to Canada in 2024 and 500,000 in both 2025 and 2026.

Regarding the number of international students coming to Canada, Mark Miller said, “We need to make sure we have a system that does our job and makes sure that people actually have the financial ability to come to Canada.” We are in the process of actually verifying this.” Approximately 300,000 temporary residents, consisting of international students and immigrant workers, arrived in Canada in the third quarter of 2023.

Mark Miller also emphasized the need to study the impact of increasing numbers of immigrants, both permanent and temporary residents, adding: “The time has come to talk about the impact of this.”

Miller said housing is only part of the equation, and the federal government also needs to lower the average age of the workforce.
