A woman fell ill on a Carnival cruise ship more than 300 miles off the coast of Cape Cod on Monday and had to be airlifted to a hospital.
The cruise line’s Legend ship was on the second day of a 14-day trip to Greenland when the crew called the Coast Guard for help around 6:30 p.m.
According to the USCG, the passenger had abdominal pain and had been vomiting throughout the day. said in a statement.
The military deployed an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter aboard a 12-story ship 180 nautical miles from the air base.
Legend made a sharp left turn toward the easternmost point of the cape to rendezvous with the crew near the coast. Carnival map data shows.
After arriving shortly before 10:30 p.m., the crew “safely hoisted the patient and cruise ship nurse,” the military said in a statement.
The pair were then taken to emergency medical services at 12:05am.
The woman’s current condition and illness remain unknown.
The cruise continues its journey to Greenland.
It left the port of Baltimore, Maryland, on Saturday and is scheduled to return home on September 16th.
The huge boat can accommodate over 3,000 people, of which over 2,100 are guests.
Carnival did not respond to a request for comment.
The paramedic’s rescue came a week after a 19-year-old college student fell off the world’s largest cruise ship.
Sigmund Lopich fell off the coast of Cuba while on vacation with friends and has never been found.
