Cloud resources are the “top target” for cyber attacks in India, according to a survey by multinational companies, Thales said in a statement announcing the “Thales Cloud Security Survey 2024,” an annual assessment of the latest cloud security threats, trends and emerging risks based on a survey of nearly 3,000 IT and security professionals across 18 countries and 37 industry verticals.
“The study is based on a global survey of 2,961 respondents among security and IT management professionals,” the company said.
The study identified “cloud resources as the top target for cyber attacks in India.”
The company added that cloud security spending is now “outpacing all other security spending categories.”
In India, nearly half of respondents (46%) reported that all corporate data stored in the cloud is sensitive, and 37% of participating organizations have experienced a cloud data breach in India, with 14% experiencing one breach in the past year, the statement said.

Additionally, 35% of organizations in India recognize the importance of digital sovereignty initiatives as a means to future-proof their cloud environments, while globally, almost half of organizations acknowledge that compliance and privacy are more difficult to manage in the cloud than on-premise.
Human error and misconfigurations continue to be the top root cause of these breaches (34%), followed by exploitation of previously unknown vulnerabilities (32%), exploitation of known vulnerabilities (21%), and failure to use multi-factor authentication (11%).
“As cloud usage remains strategically vital for many organizations, cloud resources have become a top target for cyber attacks, with cloud storage (30%), SaaS applications (30%) and cloud management infrastructure (28%) cited as the leading attack categories in India.
“As a result, protecting our cloud environment has become our top security priority, taking precedence over all other security areas,” the statement said.
