good morning. Today is December 11th for her. Today’s photo takes us to the Large Magellanic Cloud. The Large Magellanic Cloud is one of the closest galaxies to our galaxy, located about 158,000 light years away.
This Hubble Space Telescope image shows a brilliant globular cluster within the Large Magellanic Cloud. Such clusters are tightly bound and gravitationally stable, allowing millions of stars to persist in (relatively) confined space for billions of years. This makes them attractive targets for astronomers looking to study old stars.
The cluster, known as NGC 2210, was discovered by astronomer John Herschel about two centuries ago.it is It is believed that there is Approximately 11.6 billion years old.
Frankly, this gorgeous image blows my mind. This is because there are a large number of stars of various sizes clustered together. Its density is thousands of times higher than our own corner of the Milky Way galaxy. If Earth were there, the night sky would be pretty bright. This image is also a testament to the Hubble Space Telescope’s ability to capture the incredible extent and grandeur of the Large Magellanic Cloud.
