What is Danish Kringle?
Danish Kringle is a delicious baked confectionery that originated in Denmark. The buttery dough is filled with creamy filling. Shape the dough into ovals (this recipe makes 2!), bake until golden brown, and top with sweet almond vanilla frosting.
This Danish Kringle is a copy of the classic Kringle that Trader Joe’s sells at Christmas time. My kids are crazy about this snack and if I’m lucky they can have it as dessert or breakfast. Please, try it. I love using homemade marzipan in this recipe to make it even more delicious.
danish kringle ingredients
These ingredients are classic and you probably have most of them in your pantry. Check the recipe card at the bottom of the post for all exact measurements.
material
- Bread crumbs: This gives this Danish Kringle the perfect texture.
- sugar: This is what makes the recipe sweet!
- Active dry yeast: One bag is just the right amount!
- salt: Salt enhances all the flavors of the dough.
- butter: This recipe uses unsalted butter. Store it in the refrigerator so it doesn’t get cold until you use it.
- milk: This recipe uses whole milk.
- egg: This will help combine all the ingredients.
filling
- Marzipan: You can make it from scratch using this marzipan recipe or save time by buying it pre-made at the store.
egg wash
- Egg whites and water: When you mix these two ingredients, you create the egg wash that gives this Danish Kringle its beautiful golden color.
matte
- icing sugar: This gives it a sweet, melting, and creamy taste.
- water: This will help turn the sugar into a glaze.
- Vanilla and almond extract: These flavor the frosting and add an almond flavor.
- Sliced almonds: These are optional and can be used as a topping for this Danish Kringle.
How to make danish kringle at home
This recipe makes two kringles, so it’s perfect for feeding a crowd. You can also make the dough in advance and have it baked when you’re ready.
make the dough
- Mix dry ingredients with butter: In a medium bowl, combine flour, sugar, yeast, and salt. Pour the flour mixture along with the cubed butter into a food processor fitted with the blade attachment.
- pulse: Run the food processor until the butter is evenly distributed and almost broken down. You should still see some small clumps of butter throughout.
- combine: Put milk and eggs in a large bowl and mix well. Add the flour mixture to the liquid and use a wooden spoon, stiff spatula, or your hands to mix the wet and dry ingredients until well combined.
- Knead and cool: Knead the dough and shape it into a long rectangle. Cut the dough in half lengthwise. Place the dough on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, cover, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
- Roll the dough: Once the dough has cooled, place it on a lightly floured surface and use a rolling pin to roll out each piece of dough into a long rectangle about 6 x 24 inches.
add stuffing
- Preparation: While the dough is chilling, preheat the oven to 375 degrees F and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Roll marzipan: Divide the marzipan in half, stretch each half to the length of the dough, and flatten it slightly. Place marzipan on each piece of dough. If it’s a little too long after you’ve rolled it out flat, you can trim it to fit inside the fabric.
- Folding: Fold one side of the fabric over the marzipan and fold the rest of the fabric on top, using a little water to secure the seams. Turn the kringle over and place the seam side down.
- Shape into an oval: Shape each length of kringle into an oval, fitting one end into the other to join the ends, and seal the seams with a little water. (My oval was about 12 x 9 inches from longest point to widest point).
- bake: Place each kringle on its own sheet pan, wash the top of each kringle with egg, and bake, one at a time, until the kringle is golden brown, 20 to 25 minutes. Store the kringle in the refrigerator until ready to bake.
make the glaze
- Whisk: When the kringle is completely baked, remove it from the oven and let it cool to room temperature. While it cools, make the frosting by combining the powdered sugar, water, almonds, and vanilla extract in a medium bowl.
- Drizzle: Once the kringles have cooled, drizzle the frosting all over each kringle, scatter the sliced almonds on top, and serve.

variation
This Danish Kringle is delicious as is, but you can easily arrange it to make your own Danish Kringle!
- Change the filling. This kringle is a classic almond kringle, but you can also get creative and use other fillings like cherry pie filling, apple pie filling, pumpkin, or cheesecake.
- Save time: If you don’t have time, you can also use store-bought marzipan instead of homemade marzipan.
