in video clipIn this article posted over the summer, Dr. Shirazi revealed that the “secret sauce” for cleaning makeup sponges was actually olive oil.
“Let’s find out the best way to clean your beauty blender. You should always clean it after each use,” Dr. Shirazi began.
She first explained what happens when you wash your makeup sponge with water and soap in the sink.
“Try water and soap. They have a lot of surfactants that dissolve makeup and clean it, but they don’t do much,” she explained.
Surfactants are compounds used in cleaning ingredients to help remove oil from various surfaces.
After washing the sponge with soap and water, the board-certified dermatologist pointed out to the camera that the sponge was still covered in excess makeup and dirt, “There’s still makeup left.”
“So what’s the secret sauce?” she asked.
It turns out that all you need to make a sparkling clean makeup sponge is mix hot water, dish soap, and olive oil.
The dermatologist said, “Hot water is good because it helps remove debris and dirt. Add soap for surfactant.”
“The secret sauce is olive oil. Oil attracts oil,” continued Dr. Shirazi.
“It helps dissolve sebum, oil, and makeup on the skin, removing debris and removing it.”
In the clip, she reveals that she mixed all three ingredients together in a bowl and then ended up with a completely clean, spotless, and nearly new beauty blender.
“You’re a winner!” she cried.
