With summer in full swing, the airline industry is already looking ahead to next summer, when many Americans are expected to jet off to popular destinations around the world.
This is the underlying theme of many of the airline route network updates shared in September. Travelers typically start looking for flights about a year before departure, so it makes sense for airlines to announce their summer plans this far in advance.
Historically, demand for transatlantic travel increases dramatically during the summer, and several airlines are leaning into that trend.

Although September was not so flashy, American Airlines’ August network update included its largest transatlantic expansion since 2019, and the Fort Worth-based airline continued to have a busy month.
The company announced an all-new transcontinental route between Miami and Orange County, serving one of the nation’s most affluent areas. The new service to John Wayne Airport (SNA) joins recently announced service from Miami to Portland, Oregon and Sacramento.
Typically, airlines don’t issue flashy press releases when cutting routes, so it’s worth mentioning that the airline will be dropping three routes over the next few months, as first confirmed in Cirium’s schedule. Worth it.
- From Austin to St. Louis.
- From Philadelphia to Charlottesville.
- From Raleigh/Durham to Tampa.
