There were at least 19 instances in which planes nearly collided with each other in the first 10 months of this year, according to a shocking report.
The staggering number of near misses from January to October marks a dramatic increase in narrowly averted air accidents and is the highest since 2016, according to Federal Aviation Administration data. Viewed by Wall Street Journal.
This year’s total number is not yet known, but it is expected to increase in the future.
Just weeks after the data was compiled, a passenger plane landing in stormy skies over Portland International Airport nearly collided with a plane taking off, coming within just 600 feet of each other.
Fortunately, frantic calls from air traffic controllers allowed the descending plane to abort the landing in the nick of time, saving the lives of hundreds of passengers.
Such close calls are becoming more frequent, and officials theorize that they may be caused by staffing issues at air traffic control towers.
Days before the Journal’s startling report, the FAA announced it was creating an expert panel led by a former safety board official and a sleep expert to address fatigue among air traffic controllers after a series of near-miss incidents.
The three-member committee will begin work in January to “examine how the latest science on sleep needs and fatigue considerations can be applied to air traffic controller work requirements and schedules.” It’s planned.
The FAA met its annual goal of hiring 1,500 air traffic controllers in 2023, but is still about 3,000 air traffic controllers short of its staffing goal, with most employees facing six-day work weeks. .
The Empire State faces the worst air traffic controller shortage, with New York’s terminal radar approach control station staffed at just 54% of recommended staffing.

The Big Apple kicked off 2023 with a near-catastrophic crash that was averted thanks to an emergency call from air traffic controllers.
Panicked passengers screamed in terror as the Delta arrived “within seconds” of colliding with an American Airlines plane as it crossed the runway.
Even though the Delta Airlines flight was traveling at 115 miles per hour, it slammed on its brakes and came to a stop just 300 feet from the intruder.
