Laihana, where the Razo family lives, is located on West Maui. It was one of the hardest-hit areas of the fires, with 80% of the land burned. Lahaina is a popular tourist destination, with approximately 2 million people reportedly visiting the city each year.
A family member, Courtney, told ABC News that it felt inappropriate to see tourists vacationing in Hawaii while locals “didn’t even have time to grieve on their own.”

Her niece, Tiare Lawrence, said in an Instagram post that Dizon and her brother narrowly escaped burns in a fire while hiding behind an ocean breakwater. The post said Dizon injured his arm while fleeing to safety.
