It is an old tradition for married women to take their husband’s surname. These days, some women choose to say yes and keep using their maiden name. Is it a sign of feminism and their claim to independence? Also, would a woman using her spouse’s last name feel servile? Two women share their insights.
Historically, when a man and a woman married, the woman was under the protection and authority of her husband. Legally she does not exist and has lost her identity. She could not own her business or property and was completely disenfranchised. Her sexual access was implied, which meant her husband was allowed to have sex with her whenever he wanted. Thanks to the many brave women who fought for equal rights, today’s women are bold enough to make a name for themselves, even choosing the name they will use after marriage.
