BALTIMORE — The Carroll County Health Department announced Tuesday that a fox found near Taneytown in Carroll County has tested positive for the rabies virus.
The fox was found dead near Starboard Court in the Windy Hills development off Trevanion Road on Jan. 26, but health officials believe people and pets in the area may have been exposed to the virus. I am concerned that this may be the case.
“Exposure to rabies can occur through a bite or scratch, or when an infected animal’s saliva enters the eyes, nose, mouth or open wound of a person or another animal,” said Joe, Rabies Program Manager at the Department of Health. Mancuso said.
In Maryland, the virus is commonly found in cats, skunks, foxes, groundhogs, and bats, but it can also spread to other animals such as dogs, ferrets, and livestock.
Anyone who may have been exposed to this fox, or whose pets may have been exposed to this fox’s bites, scratches, or saliva, should contact the Health Department at 410-876-1884 for a risk assessment. Please call.
If you are bitten or scratched by a wild or stray animal, do the following:
- Wash the area with soap and water for a few minutes
- Keep your pet away from other people and pets
- Call your doctor or veterinarian and contact your health department
