NEW SHOREHAM, Rhode Island (AP) — Officials at a vacation spot off the coast of Rhode Island urged the public to stay away after a fire destroyed a historic hotel on Block Island early Saturday morning.
The fire at the Harborside Inn began overnight, and firefighters continued to search the area on Saturday morning.
The Block Island Chamber of Commerce said about 50 firefighters were airlifted and transported from across the state to help fight the fire, along with at least four ladder trucks. facebook post.
The roof of the inn collapsed around 1:30 a.m., but there were no serious injuries.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Block Island Ferries said in a post on its website that its ferries had transported emergency vehicles to the island overnight for relief.
The ferry company had to adjust its schedule. The Pt. Judith Express Ferry resumed operations on Saturday afternoon. Newport Express Ferry departures have been cancelled. Legacy ferries operate on revised ferry schedules.
Block Island is about 19 kilometers (12 miles) off the coast of Rhode Island. There is one town called New Shoreham.
According to its website, the 36-room Harborside Inn has welcomed visitors to Block Island “with Victorian harbor charm” for more than a century. It is registered on the National Register of Historic Places.
