Lifestyle
When I received my 10-year-old daughter’s Christmas wish list this year, the toy request was replaced with “slay fashion items” and it was clear how much she had changed in 12 months.
I understand now, times have changed since I was young (which was a long time ago) and many 11-year-olds are no longer real kids and have instead taken on all the skincare and fashion stuff. Live your best teenage life, fully and truly. and accompanying accessories.
Unfortunately, it looks like there won’t be a lot of fashion for tweens and teens in 2023.
That is, it doesn’t really matter (at least in my opinion) either in terms of taste or in terms of the amount of fabric used to make the garment.
“Less is more when it comes to tween fashion.”
From singlets, T-shirts, shorts, swimsuits, skirts, dresses, and even jumpers and cardigans, less is more when it comes to tween fashion. Sorry, but when it comes to fashion for tween girls, less is more.
Take a look at some of the highlights, including the Active Basic Kids High Rise Short (with invisible scrunch).
Well, there’s a reason this is number one on my list. Because WTAF?!
A scrunch (I had to Google it) is a seam or stitch between the contours of your butt that defines and lifts your butt, creating the look of a toned, sculpted butt.
And why on earth would you want your tween’s butt to look toned and sculpted? why? !
Tell her it’s for her and her confidence.
Or maybe because of her long gym sessions?
Or maybe for a job in the health and fitness industry?
Well, I don’t think that’s the cause, so I can’t say anything.
As mothers of two girls, ages 11 and 9, they (along with many of their colleagues) are concerned to varying degrees with their appearance, and see this type of fashion as a “feel” or a “mood.” It is presented as “aesthetics.” Jargon is incredibly inappropriate, impractical, and frankly, even offensive.
I mean, who wants stitches in their butt? No matter how good it (supposedly) looks, guess what?
Of course when you’re exercising.
It just looks like an express wedge maker, and pulling material out of your butt with your fingers is never a good look and just negates the value of a sculpted butt anyway.
Another big problem with this type of clothing, and this also applies to sports crop tops, is that many girls this age don’t just care about their appearance, they also care about their image and body. That’s it.
It’s also a very common time for them to drop out of sports (which, along with adolescence, has a lot to do with these factors).
“These bike shorts aren’t just about strengthening your glutes.”
Visa PlayOn’s 2023 Youth Sport Survey found the peak age for women quitting sport in Australia was 15, with 31% citing body anxiety as the reason.
So how does wearing revealing and uncomfortable clothing actually help you when you’re running, jumping, bending, throwing, or trying to be active? ?
Well, simply not.
But it’s not just glute-enhancing bike shorts or shorts in general (which, let’s be honest, are getting shorter and holier-than-thou every day), but also tops.
I get that crop tops, midriff-baring T-shirts, singlets, and all that are “in,” but wouldn’t it be a disservice to fashion designers to create options that don’t always have half a girl’s torso on display? Or? Why is this required for all clothing options?
And this also applies to swimwear.
Bikini options for girls seem to be getting younger and younger each year, and one-pieces now regularly include cutouts.
Considering we live in the skin cancer capital of the world and this swimsuit is advertised as being for poolside or beach use, exposing your child’s skin to the sun is really irresponsible and again unrealistic. It seems that it is.
Call me a prude or a problem person. However, as a mother of two teenage children, who are the primary market for many of these products, I do not believe they are beneficial to the child’s self-esteem, confidence, or comfort.
All I can say is that no matter how much I cringe when I look back at the photos now, I cherish the days when I was 11 years old and my mom still picked out my clothes for me.
At least I was warm and comfortable and didn’t have to worry about picking out wedges every time I moved.
