The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, said on Saturday that the African Union’s accession to the G20 will provide a “favorable framework” for the continent to make its “effective contribution” to helping the world confront global challenges.

“I welcome the African Union to join the G20 as a full member,” he wrote. “This membership, which we have long called for, will provide an appropriate framework to strengthen advocacy on behalf of the continent and its effective contribution to confronting global challenges.” On X, formerly known as Twitter.
The full strength of the African Union has 55 members, but six countries ruled by the military junta are currently suspended. Collectively, they have a GDP of $3 trillion and a population of about 1.4 billion.
As a G20, the group includes 19 countries and the European Union, accounting for 85% of global GDP, with South Africa the only member state from the continent.
“As a continent, we look forward to further advancing our aspirations on the global stage using the G20 platform,” Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is at the summit, posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.
