Last week, we reviewed the first Geekbench results for the A17 Pro, which showed that the CPU’s performance was slightly better than Apple claims. We’ve seen the first GPU benchmark results, and the performance appears to match and exceed Apple’s promises.
Apple shared that the A17 Pro GPU offers up to 20% faster performance than the A16 Bionic, as well as new features such as mesh shading, hardware-accelerated ray tracing, and more.

In the Aztec Ruins high-rise offscreen test, the iPhone 15 Pro Max with A17 Pro performed approximately 19% better than the iPhone 15 Plus with A16 Bionic.
The iPhone 15 Pro also offered 27% more frames than the 15 Plus. The 15 Pro and Pro Max performed even better against the iPhone 14 Pro’s A16, with up to 51% performance improvement.
In the Aztec Ruins normal tier off-screen test, the A17 Pro also showed a big improvement, with the 15 Pro delivering up to 45% more frames than the 14 Pro with the A16 chip. The 15 Pro Max shows significantly less improvement in these results compared to the 14 Pro Max.
In the Manhattan 3.1 off-screen test, the A17 Pro chip rendered a total of 12386 frames, with an improvement of up to 31.5% on the latest GPU, compared to up to 9417 frames on the A16 Bionic.
On average, the A17 Pro got 199.8 fps and the A16 got 151.9 fps.
In all comparisons between the new iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max with A17 Pro and the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus or 14 Pro, the GPU performance is no more than 20%. But that’s why Apple says the GPU is “up to” 20% faster.
In any case, Apple’s new GPU appears to offer more than a 20% improvement. We’ll be keeping an eye out for the first real-world gaming experiences and other reports on the performance enabled by the new GPUs.
