The original God of War game is said to be returning to PS5, but we’re not giving too much weight to the source.speak at Xbox era Podcast – We Know, We Know – Infamous rumormonger Nick Baker has said that a remaster of Kratos’ first three adventures “might be happening.” Perhaps it’s worth noting that God of War 3 has already been re-released for PS4 and is also fully playable with backward compatibility on Sony’s new generation console.
The Japanese giant is famous for remastering the first two games in the series for PS3 and PSP. This started a trend at the time, leading to a large number of his popular PS2 titles being re-released in HD. But outside of cloud streaming, the PS5 can’t play PS3 games natively, so it would make sense to bring them back.
“I’ve heard that the original God of War trilogy may be remastered for PlayStation,” Baker declared, though he was understandably vague on details. “Is this a direct port of what we got on PS3? In that case, I’m a little less excited. Or is this something more complex and in the realm of remakes?”
Baker has covered a lot of PlayStation rumors in the past, but many of them haven’t come to fruition. Back in 2021, he said there was a “possibility” that a new Notorious piece would be announced at the recital. PS showcase, but the event ended with no mention of Sucker Punch’s superhero series. A year later, he claimed that a new Sly Cooper was also in development, but this prompted the Seattle-based developer to deny that speculation completely, saying, games have not been developed.”
Of course it is Possible Sony may try to revive the original God of War game purely for preservation purposes. Without going too deep into spoilers, the new God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla addon has strong ties to his PS2 titles, and these classics are no longer easy to play on modern hardware.
That’s a good guess, but that’s probably all there is to it.
