For the past few months, Google Messages has been working on its Profiles feature, and now we have a better idea of what it’s for.
About APK Insights: In this “APK Insight” post, we have decompiled the latest version of the application that Google has uploaded to the Play Store. When you decompile these files (called APKs for Android apps), you can see various lines of code that hint at future features. Please note that Google may or may not provide these features, and our interpretation of them may be incomplete. However, for the ones that are near completion, we will be able to show you what they will look like when shipped. Please keep that in mind as you read on.
Version 20231106_01_RC00 of Google Messages, currently in beta, describes a simple feature: “Choose a profile name and photo to help others recognize you.”

Back in January, people discovered a “Profile” settings page. This page can be glimpsed by searching in the Android system settings, but it does not load properly. Turning on/off “Profile Sharing” and “Visibility” controls works. You can receive notifications when new contacts are found and there is also an “update contact”.
We don’t yet know if profiles are a feature of RCS or something managed and hosted by Google (Messages) itself. Your profile name and photo will likely appear at the beginning of the conversation. Currently, tapping this opens the Google Contacts app.
Profiles joins other messaging features, including Google account-based device pairing and a voice recorder redesign that the company hasn’t officially announced yet.
