An X Corp. account belonging to Mandiant, a cybersecurity company owned by Google LLC, was hacked on Wednesday and used to facilitate cryptocurrency fraud.
Scammers who took over the account of I did. Unsurprisingly, the link in X’s post directed readers to a fake phishing site asking them to enter their wallet details in order to claim a share of the handout.
The account was restored several hours after it was hacked.Mandiant spokesperson later tweeted“As you may be aware, yesterday Mandiant lost control of this X account that had 2FA enabled. At this time, there are no signs of malicious activity other than the affected X account, and we has returned to our control. Once our investigation is complete, we will share our findings with you.”
The fact that Mandiant claims to have enabled two-factor authentication raises obvious questions: How did the hacker gain access? Was it a security issue on X’s side? Or did someone gain access to a device belonging to Mandiant? SiliconANGLE will update the situation once Mandiant releases its findings.
Mandiant was acquired by Google in 2022 in a $5.4 billion deal. The company has continued to operate under the Mandiant brand ever since, but some of its core products are now offered in conjunction with his Google Cloud cybersecurity products.
Mandiant’s account is not the first time that an X or Twitter account has been hacked. But Bleeping Computer report Today, there has been a recent increase in account takeovers belonging to X users with gold or gray badges. Gold within an X indicates a public organization or company, and gray indicates a profile representing a government agency or official.
Recent account takeovers include those of Canadian Senator Amina Djerba, Brazilian politician Yuviratan Sanderson, and a nonprofit organization known as the Green Grid. In most cases, those who took over the targeted accounts facilitated cryptocurrency fraud. It is not yet clear whether this is an opportunistic hack or part of a broader campaign.
