Google’s decisive effort to catch up with OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, has proven more difficult than expected.
Google representatives told some cloud customers and business partners earlier this year that they would have access to the company’s new conversational AI, a large language model known as Gemini, by November. But the company recently told people not to expect it until the first quarter of next year, according to two people with direct knowledge. The postponement comes at a bad time for Google, where cloud revenue growth is slowing while larger rival Microsoft’s growth is accelerating. Part of Microsoft’s success has been in selling OpenAI’s technology to customers.
