“We have to change what we’re teaching so students have new skills, but it also has implications for faculty, which creates all these great new opportunities for how we create content,” White explains.
Understanding and embracing how to use AI is crucial, he adds, which is why his other big job when it comes to teaching on Coursera is that White’s “Prompt Engineering for ChatGPT” course became the second most popular course overall on Coursera in 2023.
White, who also serves as senior adviser to the Vanderbilt University president on generative AI in education, said most universities are still struggling to strike a balance between acceptable uses of AI in the classroom, admissions processes and even research.
