FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) — Influenza, COVID-19 and respiratory syncytial virus cases continue to rise across the region.
“We’re definitely seeing an increase in hospitalizations across the county,” said Mato Parker, emergency medical services coordinator for the Fresno County Department of Public Health.
Fresno County Emergency Medical Services Coordinator Mato Parker said this increase is common this time of year.
“Normally during the colder months, we see an increase in respiratory illnesses. And we’ve seen an increase in respiratory illnesses here in the Central Valley, as well as other types of illnesses. And of course, we typically see an increase in respiratory illnesses in the Valley. So is trauma,” Parker said.
Parker said that as hospitalizations increase, his department is working closely with other counties and the California Department of Public Health to make necessary changes to provide the best care for patients in need. He added that
Health officials are warning people to take extra precautions if they have underlying health conditions.
“Especially if you are over 65, you are at the highest risk of being negatively affected by these viruses. Viruses can sneak up on you and kill you, so see your doctor, get tested and protect yourself. Know your symptoms, so you can get treatment,” said CDC Director Dr. Mandy Cohen.
Cohen also said this is the first time in history that vaccines exist for all three viruses.
“We are still at the beginning of flu season, so get your latest flu shot and start getting your latest coronavirus vaccination. “It’s not too late to prevent yourself, because there will be many more viruses emerging,” Cohen said.
Urgent Care may also be a treatment option during the holiday season when emergency rooms are affected.
Fresno County Public Health says it’s important to know when to see either one.
