Dusk Form Lycanroc is coming to Pokémon GO from the “The Lustrous Odyssey” event. Starting with this event, some Ivans hatched or encountered by Trainers will be able to evolve into Twilight Lycanroc instead of Midday or Midnight Lycanroc.
Niantic’s official announcement left many confused as there was no clear explanation of how you could get the Dusk Form Lycanroc or what would happen to the Rockruff you already have.
Let’s clear up the confusion and see how to get the new Lycanroc form and how to get the old Midnight and Midday forms.
How to get Dusk Form Lycanroc in Pokémon GO
Lycanroc (dusk)
Starting with the Lustrous Odyssey event, newly caught or newly hatched Chariots will be able to evolve into Dusk Form Lycanroc.
There are no special requirements to evolve it. If you are lucky enough to hatch or catch a dogfish with this evolutionary trait, you can evolve it. Unfortunately, this means that the Ivanko you currently own cannot evolve into her Dusk form of Lycanroc.
I need a newly caught (or hatched) dog With this evolution option, if you’re lucky enough to get one, tapping on a dogfish will give you the option to evolve it into its Dusk form.
Does this mean that the current dogfish will not be able to evolve into Dusk Form even if the Lustrous Odyssey event begins? Yes, only new things have a “chance” to evolve (based on current wording).
In addition, these dogs cannot evolve into Lycanrocs in their midday or midnight forms. Only Dusk Form can evolve.
During the event period, you can catch a special dog from the following locations:
- 2km and 7km eggs – Dogfish hatched from these eggs have a chance to evolve into Dusk Form Lycanroc.
- Encounter during field research – Some Rocks captured as field research rewards will be able to evolve into Dusk Lycanroc instead of Midday or Midnight Lycanroc.
In the main series of games, not all Ivankos are created equal. Ivanko can have a variety of abilities, which affect which form Lycanroc can evolve into.
A dog with abilities Keen Eye, vital spiritor solid Evolves into:
- daytime form Lycanroc when you level up during the day.
- midnight form Lycanroc when you level up at night.
A dog with abilities my own tempo evolve to dusk form Lycanroc when leveled up in the evening.
Niantic decided to implement this mechanic in Pokémon GO, but since Pokémon GO doesn’t have the ability, they decided to take a different route and implement it. We are not very happy with this decision, as there is too much randomness in obtaining a dogfish that can evolve into Dusk form.
How to get Midnight Form and Midday Form Lycanroc in Pokémon GO
Unlike the Dusk form of Lycanroc, the Midnight and Midday forms can evolve by following Ivanko’s evolutionary timeframe, which allows for this type of evolution.
To obtain them, you need a dogfish that supports this evolution. This includes all dogs captured up to January 6, 2024, and some captured after that date.
When evolving these rockfish, you must follow these rules:
- Evolve your dog during the day to get Lycanroc in its midday form.
- Evolve Ivanko during the night to get Midnight Form Lycanroc
Which Lycanroc form should I get?
All three Lycanroc forms are very similar in terms of DPS output and can be used more or less interchangeably. That being said, they aren’t great. Lycanroc is rocktype Pokemon, and is in the unfortunate position of being neither great nor terrible.
Comparatively, Lycanroc performs similarly to Golem, Aerodactyl, Rhydon, Aggron, Omastar, and Hisuian Avalugg. None of these Pokemon are great attackers, and most fall into the C or D tiers on the best attacker tier list.
Lycanroc’s best moveset in all forms is Rock Throw rock and stone edge rock, and you probably want it for raiding. For PvP, you’ll need other movesets, but you might want to do something other than Lycanroc in PvP. If you really want a Rock type, Regirock, Tyranitar, and Aurorus are all better options.
Status comparison
Although their stats are very similar, there are some flavorful differences in Lycanroc’s form.
Midnight Form Lycanroc has a better, more rounded stat spread when compared to Dusk and Midday forms, but deals less damage due to its lower attack stats. The Twilight and Midday forms are almost identical, but the Twilight form has a slight advantage due to its +3 attack stat.
Overall, these differences are negligible, especially when compared to the gold standard of rock-type attackers: Tyranitar, Rhyperior, and Rampardos.
I think it’s clear from these two tables that you don’t need to worry too much about powering up your Lycanroc, regardless of which form you get.
It is a well-designed Pokémon that is loved by many, but unfortunately it is not worthy of Stardust.
What does Lycanroc look like in shiny twilight, midday, and midnight forms in Pokémon GO?
Since the start of Alola Season in March 2022, Shiny Dogfish has been available in Pokémon GO. It is very difficult to get a shiny dogfish, but it is possible and you can unlock his shiny form Lycanroc. Here’s a visual comparison:
