TL;DR
- Nothing CEO Karl Pei praised Apple’s decision to adopt RCS messaging.
- Pei said Nothing Chats is still in development and defended its usefulness by pointing out how the green bubble persists.
A day after Nothing announced it was bringing iMessage compatibility to the Nothing Phone 2 with Nothing Chats, Apple went ahead and dropped the RCS bomb. Essentially, the iPhone will now support RCS messaging with iMessage. This means Android and iPhone users can now safely use modern messaging features like read receipts, input indicators, and message reactions. Most importantly, users can share high resolution photos and videos between her Android phone and iPhone. This pretty much defeats the purpose of using a separate chat app like Nothing Chats to have iMessage conversations between Android and iOS.
Nothing CEO Karl Pei comments on Apple’s announcement Posted in X (Old Twitter), “Great decision! Good for consumers, good for competition, good for innovation. Hats off to the EU, the carriers, Google, and most importantly Apple. ”
The question on everyone’s mind is what this means for Nothing’s newly announced efforts. When a user asked X’s Pei if Nothing Chats was still in development, the executive replied, “Yeah, this is great, but it doesn’t solve the blue bubble vs. green bubble problem.”
Yes, this is great, but it doesn’t solve the problem of blue and green bubbles.
Will you use Nothing Chats after Apple officially adopts RCS?

Still, if the coloring system is enough, Pei’s justification for Nothing Chats’ usefulness seems a bit weak. Sure, it might work as a stopgap for Nothing Phone 2 users until Apple implements RCS in iMessage, but after that it could be a pointless solution to a problem that doesn’t exist. My colleague Dhruv Bhutani had already pointed out how Nothing Chats was underpinned by an unsustainable business model, but Apple just shut it down before it could get off the ground.
