Labour’s Jonathan Ashworth claimed the country “hasn’t had a serious economic plan for 14 years”.
Speaking to GB News, Ashworth said: “Whatever Rishi Sunak and other Tory MPs may tell you in the next 24 or 48 hours about the tax changes, the reality is that people are worse off. Are you better off in Shadow of the Conservatives? No, you’re not.
“The reason the tax burden is so high is because of the Conservatives. The reason for that is because we haven’t had a serious economic plan in 14 years.
“We have had 14 years of weak growth and shrinking living standards, which is why our priority as a Labor Government will be to grow our economy, working alongside our business community because we know businesses create jobs and help create jobs.” Spread prosperity.
“We want to make our economy driven because we know that’s how you can invest back into the economy, and you can actually raise the living standards of working people.
“If you are a young couple, and you want to get on the housing ladder and you can’t at the moment because there aren’t enough homes being built, a Labor government will build an extra 1.5 million homes.
“And a young couple who wants to start a family? Well, a Labor government will introduce free breakfast clubs in every primary school for children. We will invest in recruiting more specialist teachers. And if, heaven forbid, you get sick, there will be an extra two million NHS appointments.”
