Disney’s live-action version of “The Little Mermaid” made a huge splash on Disney+ over the weekend, breaking records for its debut on the streamer.
‘The Little Mermaid’ breaks streaming record on Disney+
The live-action remake, starring Halle Bailey as Ariel, debuted on Disney+ on September 6, 2023.
According to a press release shared by Disney, the film is now “the most-watched Disney movie premiere on Disney+ since ‘Hocus Pocus 2.'” The film also garnered 16 million views in its first five days of streaming on the service. According to Disney, “views” on Disney+ are defined as “total stream time divided by runtime.”
This follows strong box office success for the film, which opened over Memorial Day weekend in North America and grossed $118.6 million, and domestically it was among the top five grossers at the time with approximately $300 million. The summer ended as a movie. The Little Mermaid has grossed $570 million worldwide to date, ranking it among the top 10 global films of 2023.

Live-action version of “The Little Mermaid”
“The Little Mermaid” is directed by Oscar-nominated Rob Marshall, known for “Chicago” and Disney’s “Mary Poppins Returns.” The remake stars Harry Bailey as Ariel, Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, Daveed Diggs as Sebastian the Crab, Awkwafina as Scuttle, the diving bird, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder, and King Triton. Starring Javier Bardem and Melissa McCarthy as Ursula. Noma Dumezweni plays a new character, Queen Selina, Eric’s mother.
Alan Menken, who wrote the music for the original 1989 version of The Little Mermaid, revised some of the lyrics for the live-action remake with the help of Lin-Manuel Miranda.
