Working at a vehicle inspection station in Katy, Texas was never part of Jaylan Gray’s plans. He dreamed of becoming a park ranger, but when his mother died and his younger brother Julian became his only priority, he dropped out of college and had to give up that dream. did not.
“He’s my reason,” said Gray. told CBS News last year. “From that day on, I vowed to protect him at all costs.”
However, the situation quickly deteriorated and became unbearable.
Their mother left home to her brothers, When Mass Freeze Hits Texas in 2021, the pipe burst and ruined everything. The contractor Gray hired for the repairs has exhausted their life reserves, leaving the boys to live with their last surviving relatives.
Soon, a nonprofit organization called Katy Responds found out about their situation. The group has helped more than 100 families by restoring their homes after natural disasters. Few seemed more valuable than the Gray brothers.
Ron Peters said the group felt they “have to help” the boys and called their situation “heartbreaking”.
“They didn’t think people would want to jump in and help them,” Peters said.
Ms Gray said she was “overwhelmed” by the support from the group. Thanks to a large number of donors and volunteers, their home has been restored.
Since their story was first told last year, things have only gotten better for the boys. Viewers are now “paying the full price” to become a park ranger and paying for Gray’s return to college. This is a “complete 180” from the previous situation, Gray said.
“It was just a random act of kindness that helped me get there,” he said.
