New York City subway service was suspended Wednesday morning after dozens of car windows were smashed, disrupting thousands of people ahead of their morning commute, the MTA said.
The MTA said the W train was out of service for several hours as it was repairing the destroyed train and other trains along the same yellow line (N, Q and R). Trains on the B and D lines were also affected.
A total of 78 windows were broken in about 30 rail cars in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens, according to the Department of Transportation. The damage was first discovered around midnight Wednesday and appears to have occurred while the train was in use, rather than at the depot.
It was not clear what kind of vandalism occurred, as no other details were immediately released by the transit agency.
It’s unclear when service is expected to return to the line, which runs from Astoria Dittmars Boulevard in Queens to the Whitehall Street South Ferry in Lower Manhattan. It was not clear where or the extent of the vandalism.
Investigation is ongoing.
