Manhattan commuters were caught in a close call Monday night when a construction boom fell on the bus they were riding in, with several injured and taken to hospital, but no fatalities, police said. announced.
A construction boom arm struck the top of the M6 bus on Madison Avenue and East 48th Street around 8:30 p.m. Monday, police said. Several windows were smashed and glass flew into the bus.
Five people, including a 56-year-old bus driver, were injured and were taken to Bellevue Hospital after complaining of pain and abrasions, police said, but said they were in stable condition.
A 52-year-old boom operator also complained of back pain and was taken to Bellevue in a stable condition, police said.
Of the three injured passengers, a 27-year-old woman was taken to New York Presbyterian Church/Weill Cornell Medical Center in stable condition. Another 27-year-old and a 20-year-old were transported to Bellevue in stable condition.
The fire department has reported three more injuries, but has no updated information on the casualties.
The bus remained at the scene after the accident. Police said they had no suspicion of criminality and were investigating the cause of the crash.
