National Mathematics Day 2023: National Mathematics Day (NMD) is celebrated on December 22 every year. It is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of the great Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan.
history December 22 was designated as National Mathematics Day by the Manmohan Singh government in 2012. Since then, National Mathematics Day has been celebrated every year. The year 2012 was also called and celebrated as the “National Year of Mathematics.”
Srinivasa Ramanujan was born on December 22, 1887 in Erode, Tamil Nadu. He acquired knowledge of trigonometry at the tender age of 12, and at the age of 15 acquired George Shoebridge’s Kerr’s Introduction to Elementary Results of Pure and Applied Mathematics.
Ramanujan is one of the greatest mathematicians in Indian history, known for his work in the fields of Riemann series, hypergeometric series, elliptic integrals, continued fractions, and functional equations of the zeta function.
In 1911, he published his first paper in the Journal of the Indian Mathematical Society. He received his bachelor’s degree for his studies at Cambridge University in 1916.
Ramanujan spent his childhood in great hardship and poverty. He died on April 26, 1920 at the age of 32.
The great Indian mathematicians left behind around 4,000 unique theorems.
significance
National Mathematics Day is celebrated with the aim of spreading awareness about the importance of mathematics and the contribution of Srinivasa Ramanujan in the field of mathematics.
At NMD, like Srinivasa Ramanujan, who had no formal education, children are encouraged to go beyond textbooks and engage in critical thinking and logical reasoning. On this occasion, schools and universities organize several competitions, Olympics and other educational events.
Mathematics is an essential part of life, enriched by the contributions of great Indian mathematicians such as Aryabhata, Brahmagupta, Mahavira, and Bhaskara II.
