The Taurid meteor shower is not quite over, with one of the two meteor showers scheduled to peak this weekend. During the Northern Taurid meteor shower, annual light rainduring the most active period, sky watchers may see a bright meteor or two streaking across the night sky.
of Southern Taurid meteor shower The peak was on November 5th, and the dynamic duo began to be visible in the night sky from mid-October. Northern Taurus is expected to peak around 7:21 p.m. ET Sunday, according to EarthSky.
A comet that arose from a parent comet called enke, both Taurid meteor showers typically produce meteors at a low rate of 5 per hour. But because comet debris tends to be large, up to 1 meter (3 feet) in diameter, Taurid meteors appear brighter as they penetrate the atmosphere, Bill Cook, director of NASA’s Meteor Environment Office, told CNN. Told.
Some of the giant meteors typically expected from Taurid meteors are brighter than Venus, the second brightest object in the night sky after the Moon, and are classified as bolides. According to NASA.
“If I was going to go out to see the Taurid meteor shower, I would be prepared to spend most of the night looking at it for a long time,” Cook said. “I’m going to get as comfortable as possible, bring out my sleeping bag and cot, put on proper clothes, and spend hours outside.”
Peak activity for the northern Taurid meteor shower will span several nights before and after Sunday. According to the American Meteor Society. If local weather conditions permit, the best time to spot meteors is after midnight in any time zone. Cook said the meteor shower appears to originate from the bright constellation Taurus and will reach its highest point in the sky during the early morning hours.
The moon will be in its new moon phase and the illumination will be only 2%. According to the American Meteor Societyits brightness does not impede the visibility of meteors, providing ideal viewing conditions.
Although the appearance rate of the Taurid meteor shower is low this year, American Meteor Society Astronomers noted that they have observed that the activity of the Southern Taurid meteor shower increases every three or seven years, potentially doubling its rate. Scientists predict the next chance to see an explosion known as the Taurus swarm will be in 2025, Cook said.
The northern Taurid meteor shower is thought to be the remains of several asteroids that were once part of Comet Encke, but broke apart along with other space rocks. tens of thousands of years agoaccording to Mr. Cook.
These celestial bodies, known as enke complexas they make their orbital journey around the sun, they leave a trail of debris that appears as the Taurid meteor shower when Earth’s orbit intersects their path.
Occasionally, the following meteorites occur: bigger than usual, like Taurus, can punch through Earth’s atmosphere and survive unscathed. When meteorites fall to the ground, they are called meteorites.
“Most meteorites burn up overhead and never reach the ground. The larger ones, the meter-sized and rock-sized ones, can break off and scatter meteorites on the ground,” Cook said. He added that the meteorite was small and unlikely to cause any damage. Approximately 48.5 tons (44,000 kilograms) of this space debris rains down on Earth every day. NASA estimates.
“By the time the meteorite hits the ground, it will be in cooler conditions,” Cook said. “They won’t make a fire. It’ll be cold. You can pick it up.”
Meteors from the Northern Taurid meteor shower are expected to be visible in the sky until the rains end on December 2nd. American Meteor Society. If you’d like to see more, here are the remaining meteor showers that will peak in 2023.
