ONVIF releases first add-on for secure communications
ONVIF, the global standardization initiative for IP-based physical security products, has released the final version of its TLS configuration add-on that enhances the security of communications between devices and software clients within physical security systems.
This add-on supports configuring transport layer security encryption, allowing compliant video management systems to initially configure or update TLS settings on compliant devices, such as cameras, to support encrypted communication between devices and clients. I will make it possible.
“Cybersecurity continues to grow in importance, and using TLS as a foundational layer of cyber resiliency is the baseline,” said ONVIF Steering Committee Chair Leo Levit. “This new add-on allows end users and system integrators to continue combining products from different vendors while still having a standard way to configure TLS for improved security.”
The TLS Configuration add-on is the first add-on to be released. Add-ons include functionality that addresses specific use cases or end user needs not already covered by the ONVIF profile. Add-ons are also a new category of ONVIF specifications that complement the ONVIF profile, allowing a manufacturer to not only comply with his ONVIF profile, but also add or extend that compliance to include specific features. A product must conform to his ONVIF profile before it can claim conformity to ONVIF add-ons.
The add-on concept makes ONVIF more interoperable and flexible, allowing it to respond more quickly to market needs. Add-ons allow you to easily adapt to evolving technology/specification requirements, such as in the case of cybersecurity. On the other hand, an ONVIF profile is a permanent fixed feature set, which allows functional products to be developed only on top of the profile. Add-ons also support versioning to accommodate new technology additions and updates, unlike profiles that do not change.
Founded in 2008, ONVIF is the leading and well-known industry forum promoting interoperability of IP-based physical security products. The organization has a global membership base of established camera, video management systems, and access control companies and approximately 28,000 profile-compliant products. ONVIF offers Profile S for streaming video. Profile G for video recording and storage. Profile C for physical access control. Profile A for a more extensive access control configuration. Profile T for advanced video streaming. Profile M for analytics application metadata and events, and Profile D for access control peripherals. ONVIF continues to work with its members to expand the number of IP interoperability solutions that ONVIF-compliant products can provide.
