Opera said today it is launching the second version of Opera One in developer beta with features including new multimedia controls, split tabs, and new AI capabilities.
The company is introducing new themes and design elements to give Opera One R2 a fresh look.
The company has traditionally placed multimedia controls on the sidebar. But with the new version, control can be on its own floating window, just like the picture-in-picture video module. Opera said it has made sure that the resizable floating controls will match the browser theme you’ve set. Depending on the size, the multimedia player will have controls such as play/pause, next, previous, popup, and volume options.
Opera One R2 also brings new tab controls with a split tab window marquee feature, so you can work on two web pages at the same time. Some newer browsers, such as Arc and SigmaOS, have integrated this functionality well into their products.
The redesigned version adds a new underscore indicator to highlight recently closed tabs. These indicators, called traces, will lighten or darken based on the time that has passed since the tab was closed. It will be visible to people who have more than 30 tabs open.
Artificial intelligence features
Opera has been experimenting with AI features like a sidebar with its assistant ‘Aria’, an AI-powered summer class, and letting people use large language models (LLMs) natively.
The company has introduced some features with Aria such as Generate image and sound And Image understanding abilities Through the AI Features Pilot Program. These features will be integrated into Opera One R2.
With the new release, Opera introduces Page Context mode, which allows users to ask Aria questions about a web page including searching for, translating, or summarizing a specific piece of information.
Opera plans to release Opera One R2 to a wider user base later this year.
