“If you use a public Wi-Fi hotspot, install a trusted Virtual Private Network (VPN) on your device to encrypt and protect your data as you browse the internet.
“When using a public network, disable file sharing and avoid performing any sensitive operations such as banking transactions while connected. When you’re done using it, change your device’s settings to ‘Forget Network’.”
“We also recommend turning off Wi-Fi on your phone and other electronic devices before going out in public to prevent your devices from automatically connecting to hotspots.”
Anyone who has connected to free Wi-Fi networks on airport premises or on domestic flights is advised to change their passwords and report any suspicious activity on their accounts via cyber.gov.au.
