Panettone is a traditional Italian bread that is often eaten at Christmas time. This tall dome-shaped bread is made from sweet leavened dough and is usually studded with candied fruit (though other flavors are available). It is characterized by its moist, delicate texture and rich sweetness. Panettone was invented in Milan and is often given as a holiday gift.

How to make panettone french toast
This delicious panettone breakfast dish couldn’t be easier to make. A detailed recipe card is below, but here’s a quick overview of the steps:
- Make custard. To make the custard, first beat together the eggs and sugar until almost smooth. Next, mix in the milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and a pinch of salt.
- Soak the bread. Next, add a few slices of bread to the egg mixture and let them soak for about 30 seconds. Tip: If your bread is completely dry, soak it a little longer.
- Flip it over and soak the other side as well. Carefully flip the bread so it doesn’t break and let it soak for an additional 30 seconds, or until the custard covers the entire bread. Tip: Whisk the custard again before adding the next batch of bread. This will ensure that the cinnamon is evenly distributed.
- Bake the toast. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Once hot, add the soaked bread. Cook until one side is golden brown, then flip and continue cooking until the other side is golden brown. Repeat this process with the remaining bread. Tip: Start heating the pan before you start making the custard to prevent the bread from getting too sticky. You can also soak the bread in batches. Do not add more than will fit in the pan.
That’s all you need to make delicious panettone French toast. Wasn’t it easy? This recipe makes the perfect hassle-free New Year’s or Christmas breakfast that you look forward to eating every year.

panettone french toast
Wake up to this delicious French toast with panettone…so easy to make and so irresistible!
Quantity: 6 slice
calorie: 362kcal
material
- 1/2 (26.2 oz / 750 grams) Panettone
- 3 big egg
- 2 tablespoon Granulated sugar
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1/2 tea spoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 tea spoon cinnamon powder
- pinch kosher salt
- 3 tablespoon Unsalted butter (Split)
Instructions
If you’re starting with whole panettone, cut it in half lengthwise (save half for another use or double the recipe). Slice thinly to remove the crust from the outside edges, then cut the bread into 3 large (1 inch thick) slices. Cut each slice in half. When finished, you should have 6 slices of bread. Let’s set it aside.
Heat 1 tablespoon of butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
While the butter is heating, beat the eggs and sugar in a large, shallow bowl (or square baking dish) until smooth. Next, stir in the milk, vanilla, cinnamon, and a pinch of salt.
Soak two slices of bread in the egg mixture for about 30 seconds. Carefully flip and let it soak for an additional 30 seconds or until the egg mixture has penetrated the bread.
Carefully transfer the soaked bread to the skillet. Cook until browned on one side, then flip and cook until the other side is browned (about 5-7 minutes total).
Repeat this process with the remaining bread, adding 1 tablespoon of butter to the skillet for every 2 slices of bread. If the pan gets too hot, either remove it from the burner while still soaking the bread, or turn the heat down slightly.
Serve warm with your favorite toppings such as butter or maple syrup. enjoy!
Note
For best results, use whole milk. You can also use unflavored, unsweetened, thick, creamy plant-based milks (e.g. soy milk).
Panettone becomes very fragile when soaked in water. Carefully flip them in the custard (I like to use a fork with clean fingers). When adding it to the frying pan, get as close to the frying pan as possible and use a spatula to move it. If the bread breaks, push the bread inside the pan. The eggs should stick together as they cook.
If you use a large skillet to prepare this recipe, we recommend cooking the French toast in two batches. It will cook more evenly if the pot is not crowded. If you have electric griddlefeel free to cook everything at once.
By the time you’ve soaked the 6 slices, there should be some custard left. If you want to make more, one or two more pieces will be enough.
