Passengers on the ill-fated Delta flight, which had to be turned back to Atlanta after a passenger suffered from severe diarrhea, are sharing details of the unfortunate incident.
On September 1st, a flight from the United States to Barcelona, Spain, was two hours into the flight when the pilot decided to make an emergency U-turn and return to Georgia.
One unwell passenger suffered a “severe medical emergency,” which one pilot who spoke to air traffic control described as a “biohazard” that affected “the entire plane.”
The other passengers could do nothing but sit on the plane as it returned to its departure city, watching the embarrassing ordeal unfold.
“This was an experience I hope no one else has to go through. I hope the poor woman who went through this recovers.” Marie Beals-Baysinger said. DailyMail.com, expressed concern about sick passengers.
Beals Basinger said because he was sitting in first class, he didn’t have to directly deal with feces all over the plane’s carpet.
“I actually saw Delta Air Lines flight attendants walking back and forth wearing protective gear and gloves,” she explained. “I was told I had to get off the plane because it needed a deep cleaning and the carpet replaced.”
Another passenger, John Heard, who was on the plane with his wife, said the crew did a great job of removing the carpet completely.
“Ground crews removed the carpet and laid new one.Ground crews did an excellent job considering the circumstances. [with] Both the crew and the pilot,” he said. Posted in X.
“It was a mess. Even though the U-turn added hours of waiting time to the trip to Spain, the pilots made the right decision to turn back,” Hart said.
Other passengers saw the hilarious side of the whole ordeal. 1 user on XHe posted video footage of the carpet and said his brother was on the plane. His brother thought it was “the funniest thing I’ve ever experienced.”
Another user also spoke My partner, who was traveling to Barcelona that day, described the scene as “pretty awful”. “It was dripping all over the aisle and it smelled awful,” X’s post said. “Even with vanilla-scented sanitizer, it just smelled like vanilla. The plane was thoroughly cleaned after landing. They didn’t leave until about 2:30 a.m. did.”
The plane returned to Atlanta’s airport at 10:40 p.m., and after extensive cleaning by ground staff, including replacing the carpet, it took off again for Barcelona five hours later at 3 a.m.
While most passengers would have been happy to see the plane being cleaned, some may have had various commitments in Barcelona and were worried they might miss out.
Beals Basinger said she and her husband plan to board the cruise ship Celebrity Reflection once they arrive in Barcelona.
“We were worried we wouldn’t be able to go on the cruise,” she said. “We had been sitting at the airport for hours and we were all very tired. We were finally allowed to go back on the plane.”
“Delta has been very accommodating and provided ongoing updates,” she added.
Beals Basinger and her husband made it to the cruise in time despite the chaos.
Delta Air Lines issued a statement regarding the situation: “Our teams thoroughly cleaned the plane and transported you to your final destination as quickly and safely as possible. Masu.”
