Google just released Pixel Watch 2 teaser videothe smartwatch is very similar to the original, but there are some notable differences, including a new crown, an IP68 rating, and a completely different sensor array.
Ahead of its Made by Google launch event in New York on October 4, Google has “leaked” some of its upcoming Pixel lineup, including close-ups of the Pixel 8 Pro and much smaller Pixel 8 on Thursday. I’ve done it. The effect on Pixel Watch 2 was relatively short-lived. This new video is short, but it’s the first time we’ve been able to see some real differences in terms of design. (Yes, I played the video several times and held up my boyfriend’s Pixel Watch for reference.)
First, the biggest difference is the sensor array. The original Pixel Watch has a border of ECG electrodes, but it has a thin, pill-shaped array that houses a rectangular light sensor. A more circular design with smaller LEDs is evident on the Pixel Watch 2. Previous rumors suggest that the Pixel Watch 2 will feature the Sense 2 continuous electrodermal activity sensor, so that could be the reason for the redesign.
You can even get a glimpse of the IP68 rating. The original Pixel Watch only had a 50m water resistance rating. This is not too surprising as the original is also rated for 5ATM water resistance. In general, this is the water resistance required to be considered suitable for swimming. IP68 also confirms at least the level of dust resistance.
Finally, the crown appears to be more flush with the screen. A small notch can be seen on the original watch. But otherwise, the Pixel Watch 2 clearly has a similar overall design to the original. This seems to suggest that major upgrades may come from software or internal components. For example, the Pixel Watch 2 is expected to opt for the Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 Plus platform rather than Samsung’s last-generation Exynos chip.
Either way, don’t wait too long. Google has announced that the Pixel Watch 2 will be available for pre-order on October 4th, and the company will be hosting a large Pixel event on the same day.
