in my cookbook WECK Home Preservation, There is a section of homemade recipes that you can make without needing anything. canning or Fermenting. Most are kept refrigerated or at room temperature. Many of the included recipes make great homemade gifts.
If you love making homemade holiday gifts, why not try making flavored salts to give as gifts this year? I introduced the recipe for how to make it almost a year ago. roasted garlic salt. Roasted garlic salt is my very favorite flavored salt to make. We use it almost every day. However, using the methods below, you can mix and match flavor combinations to your heart’s content.
Flavored salts are an easy way to add flavor when cooking, baking, or cocktail mixing. Other preferred flavors include chive salt, rosemary salt, and lime salt.
Yield: 1/4 cup finished salt
material
- 1/4 cup coarse kosher salt
seasoning options
- 1 teaspoon fresh organic citrus, peel finely grated (wash and dry the fruit first)
- 1 teaspoon dried herbs, crushed
- 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, finely grated
- 1 teaspoon Sriracha sauce
direction
In a small bowl, combine salt and desired ingredients and mix well.
Use a funnel to transfer the salt to a clean jar. If using fresh/wet ingredients, leave the jar uncovered overnight. The next day, stir the mixture again and close the lid tightly.
Salt adds flavor, so let the flavors infuse for a day or two.
Label and date the jar and store it away from direct sunlight.
Note
Over time, the flavor will become less intense. For this reason, we make small batches as needed.
If you need finer salt, mix the salt or crush it with a mortar and pestle.
