The danger extends beyond naval ships, as rough waves are known to destroy oil rigs, wind farms and other structures adjacent to the ocean in their path. Some waves can cause rip currents that can kill beachgoers.
Although neither the Ucluelet wave nor the 1995 Norwegian wave reportedly caused significant damage or physical harm, the data on the waves is certainly concerning. If the boat had been near such extreme currents, the passengers on board would have been certain to be doomed.
