I can’t remember if there was a real lull in the weeks between CES and MWC, or if this was something we told ourselves to cushion the blow of a hardware season that now spans 11.5 months a year. Whatever the case, it seems that the days of big companies stockpiling big news for big events are mostly over.
Once upon a time, Samsung split its big announcements of the year between CES (TVs, displays, and devices) and Mobile World Congress (phones, tablets, and perhaps wearables). However, several years ago, the company moved its big mobile news headlines to a standalone event – albeit one closely linked to MWC.
On the other hand, the first Samsung Unpacked device of the year returns to the US West Coast less than a week after CES. Fortunately, some things are a little more predictable from the company’s event schedule, namely the devices scheduled to be announced at said event. Tomorrow in 10am PT/1pm ET, Samsung will unveil its latest flagship phone, the Galaxy S24. We can say that we know this much with almost absolute certainty.
Since this is Samsung we’re talking about, we also think we know a lot about the device itself, thanks to the constant drip of releases. As always, the Ultra will be the (highly priced) centerpiece of the line. Here’s some of what we think we know:
- Show new flattery
- Another set of four cameras, although the 10x zoom has been halved
- iPhone 15-style titanium frame
Unsurprisingly, artificial intelligence will take center stage tomorrow. The company expects to integrate some form of third-party generative AI on the device. By the end of 2024, I expect almost every major Android phone to offer some version of this, but I point to Samsung for being on the cutting edge with this device.
One specific AI we’ve heard about is Google’s new “Search Circle” feature, which aims to make the search engine more accessible.
Samsung will also likely announce standard S24 and S24+ options. Additional devices could be on the agenda as well.
