I’ll be the first to admit that I’m a salsa lover.
When I was in high school, my friends and I used to visit our favorite restaurant almost every week. That’s where my love for Mexican food began.
Some people may have thought it was a hole in the wall, but to us high school students, appearances didn’t matter. That restaurant had the most delicious food I have ever tasted and I still fantasize about it.
Almost every time I ate there, I got either two beef enchiladas or a taco salad. But even better than the meal itself was the chips and salsa that were served before the meal arrived.
As a matter of fact, the chips and salsa were the biggest reason I loved this restaurant. And the salsa was something you could add to anything at that place. That was very good.
I’ve had similar chips at other restaurants since then, but nothing yet rivals that salsa. However, I did find a few others that I liked.
I can’t help but compare every salsa I’ve had since then to that restaurant’s salsa.
There was something different about it than any salsa I’d ever had, and I’ve been on a mission to recreate it ever since.
It was a smooth salsa – chunky salsa isn’t bad either – but it definitely had its share of garlic.
I remember once having dinner at a friend’s house and then spending the night there. The next morning, when her mother came to wake us up, she commented on the smell of garlic that must have come from her pores.
All kidding aside, we certainly loved the place.
It’s canned food season in my house right now, and I’m always remembering the taste of salsa and looking for the perfect recipe.
I’ve tried at least 6 canned salsa recipes and have yet to find one that satisfies me.
If anyone has a piece they think would be a hit, please send it to sarah.stultz@albertleatribune.com.
I would love to try it.
