After studying recorded humpback whale “contact” calls played underwater through underwater speakers, scientists saw Twain approaching the boat, circling and responding to the whale’s “greeting signals” in a conversational manner. They were surprised.
Throughout the 20-minute interaction, Twain consistently matched the changes in interval between each playback call.

Lead author Dr. Brenda McCowan of the University of California, Davis, explained the significance of this whale conversation, saying, “This is the first communication exchange between humans and humpback whales using humpback whale language.” I’m thinking about it.”
