Scotland needs to establish a new museum on empire and slavery to “break the nationalist myth” that colonialism was a uniquely British project, a veteran MSP has said.
Willie Rennie has called on the SNP Government to accelerate long-standing plans for a venue that explains some of this country’s most difficult and sensitive history.
The former Liberal Democrat leader spoke out after false claims were circulated on Scottish social media that defeated Jacobites were sent to the Caribbean as “slaves” after the Battle of Culloden in 1746. .
In recent weeks, some pro-independence campaigners have sought to downplay or deny Scotland’s well-documented links to slave plantations in the West Indies.
“The time has come for an honest reassessment of Scots and Scotland’s role in the colonial project.”
