Hello and welcome again justicea podcast about the business of startups, where we break down the numbers and nuances behind the headlines.
This is the first of a two-part series we’ve built for you covering important topics from 2023. It’s been a very busy year in the worlds of technology, startups, and venture capital — so busy that we asked Your 2023 in a headlineAnd You delivered it!
In the first part, Mary Ann And Alex Dig into a range of key topics:
- Venture capital in 2023: The numbers started out bad this year, but improved slightly over time. This is partly because year-over-year comps became less challenging as we got deeper into the year thanks to 2022 results that had a downward bias. However, there is still a lot of capital in the market, so we are ending the year far from frozen.
- Elsewhere in the project? California’s new diversity reporting rule came out, we discussed which stage of startups you face the most, and even touched on some new fintech startups.
- Then there it was Fintech in 2023: Despite a hot start for fintech M&A at the beginning of the year, deals slowed as the year went on. Although we saw a few significant transactions. Alex brought up some fintech-related deals that he felt were also notable, to complete our summary.
- Then we had to address The creator economy in 2023: Remember, this was the year we saw the writer’s strike, the chaos at Reddit, the uproar at Twitch, and the rise of many Twitter alternatives. A busy time for creatives, even if yesterday’s hopes were that the middle class of creatives would expand more quickly than it did before.
- Then there was a return of the Main Person Syndrome, which we’ll explain more in the show!
In Part 2 – coming soon! – We brought in several TechCrunch experts to help us delve deeper into the SBF experience, cryptocurrency in general, the OpenAI fray, where the technology is today, and more. Stay close to the stocks! We have a lot planned for you.
