Valve’s next major SteamOS update brings some significant new display settings and some new performance improvements to Steam Deck. You can read everything about the SteamOS 3.5 update In a blog post on the Steam website.
The two main new features are support for variable refresh rate (VRR) and HDR when used with an external display that supports Steam decks. According to Valve, you can enable HDR if you have a compatible display, and VRR if you have a compatible USB-C adapter.
The company also changed Steam Deck’s default color rendering to “emulate the sRGB color gamut,” which Valve says results in a “slightly warmer, more vibrant color appearance.” If you don’t like this change, or want to try your own, Valve has also added settings that allow you to tweak your display’s color vibrancy and color temperature.
There are also some welcome changes that aren’t related to display settings. This update includes “an updated graphics driver with many performance and feature improvements.” Valve says the update brings “performance improvements.” star field;” Bethesda’s excellent space RPG hasn’t been validated for Steam decks, but that hasn’t stopped people from using it in Steam decks. Play games on a handheld gaming PC anyway.
Valve also promises “slightly faster sleep resumption speeds” with the new update. Every second counts!
Additionally, for Steam Deck’s Linux Desktop Mode users, the underlying Arch Linux has been updated with a new version of the Plasma desktop interface, featuring an updated Discover app store, widgets, and a new window tile system.
The BIOS also has a “voltage offset setting”. We assume this means you can more easily underbolt or overclock your Steam deck, but you should check to be sure.
