when Krista Labrusik While scrolling through social media during the height of the pandemic, she noticed a pattern.
“I was seeing a lot of girls who were incredibly fashionable and really pretty, and I just realized that none of them were mothers,” Lavrusik, 37, told Business Insider. .
She wondered why clothes could be “fun” and took it upon herself to change that.

She shared some tips for dressing better in BI. Here are her top 7:
Focus on frugality.
“I always say if you want to be trendy, be frugal with trends,” Labrusik said.
Or if you simply want to dress more modern and youthful, thrifting is ideal for that too.
“What Gen Z is wearing is 20, 30 years old anyway, and a lot of thrift stores are full of that,” Labrusik said. “You don’t have to spend a lot of money to try something.”
Remember, less is often more.
You may think that being fashionable requires dressing with bold colors, standout prints, and unique pieces.
But in Labrusik’s view, style is best achieved when “starting with the basics.”
“Remove the pattern,” she told BI. “Wear black, white, and gray, with a touch of beige.”
Simple colors and styles look more chic and are easier to style.
Follow fashionable members of Gen Z on Pinterest.
Ravrushik cites Pinterest as one of her “absolute favorite” places to find fashion inspiration, especially from young, trendy creators.
She said Instagram is a place to see finished looks and styles that have already reached the height of coolness, while Pinterest is a “creative wheelhouse” where you can see ideas in motion.
The mother of four says she often pins photos of styles she likes in the early stages of planning an outfit.
“Then I’m going to take that idea and run with it using things I have in my closet,” she said.
Don’t limit yourself to gender-specific fashion.
When Ravrushik looks for fashion inspiration, she doesn’t just look at what women wear.
“I look at Johnny Depp and Brad Pitt, and then I look at Jennifer Anderson, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Princess Diana,” she said. “It’s not exactly the same style, but you can find your own style through them.”
She said it’s less about which gender the garment is aimed at and more about how it’s styled overall.
Get inspired by 90s fashion.
Ravrushik, a millennial, said: We often get stuck in the 2010s. And she continues to wear items that were popular years ago, such as chunky ankle boots, patterned kimono-style clothing, and skinny jeans.
“I wish I could go into every closet in the world and throw it out for you,” she said with a laugh.
However, this does not mean that generational fashion is bad. In fact, it can become fashionable to look back, as long as you choose the right decade and don’t stick around for too long.
For example, Lavrusik said she loves fashion from 30 years ago and is currently in the “big ’90s era” of her life. This coincides with many Gen Zers finding fashion inspiration.
Let’s experiment more.
The main difference between trendy Gen Z and fashion-confused Millennials is how they approach style, Ravrushik said.
“Gen Z takes things less personally, and millennials feel the same way,” she told Insider. “Why not change it up, like a full side part or skinny jeans for millennials?”
The same rule applies to those who want to enhance their styling. Try new things.
Let’s take denim as an example.
“If you don’t want to go full wide-legged, baggy or low-rise, there are straight-leg options,” Labrusik said. “There are so many things I want to try.”
When in doubt, stick to this basic outfit.
There are days when you just don’t want to dress up. In such cases, Lavrusik suggests sticking to classic pieces to change up your entire look.
“A plain white T-shirt and jeans can be the base for so many great looks,” she said. “I can’t tell you how much I’m into this, especially when I don’t know what to wear.”
She said this combination not only looks great on its own, but can also be dressed up in a variety of ways.
“Any jacket you have will look incredible in it,” she said.
But most importantly, don’t overthink your outfit.
“For most people, that seems too simple,” Labrusik said. “They’re like, ‘I don’t know. It seems too boring or too basic.'” But no, it’s not. It’s actually perfect. ”
