Humanity is gradually losing access to the night sky, and astronomers are invented a new term to describe the pain associated with this loss.: “Night pain”, meaning “Sadness of the sky”. Space.com reports: In addition to our tendency to pollute the air and water and the large amounts of carbon we are releasing into the atmosphere to cause climate change, we are causing another type of pollution: light pollution. […] Given the harmful effects of light pollution, two astronomers have coined a new term to focus efforts to combat light pollution. Their terminology is reported in a short paper In the preprint database arXiv and letter For Science magazine, it’s “night pain.” Generally, it means “Sorrow of the Sky” and expresses the collective pain we are experiencing as we continue to lose access to the night sky.
Thankfully, just like there are ways to fight climate change, there are ways to deal with nighttime pain. On the ground, efforts are beginning around the world to create dark-sky reserves, where surrounding communities pledge not to prevent further light pollution. […] Tackling satellite pollution is another matter, and will require international cooperation and pressure on companies like SpaceX to better manage the skies where they carry their equipment.
