ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — This week, the New Mexico Department of Health reported more than 500 new coronavirus cases.
“The number of new coronavirus cases is increasing, but not as much as during the pandemic, but last week alone there were 550 cases and about 34 hospitalizations,” said the New Mexico Department of Health deputy. Director Laura Parajohn said.
More than 100 of them were children infected with COVID-19. Dr Parajohn said there are many factors driving the numbers up.
“Because it’s hot outside, people are spending more time indoors, where the virus is more likely to spread,” Dr Parajoong said. “People are going on vacation, flying around and transmitting the virus.”
Although the numbers fluctuate, Dr. Parajohn said Covid-19 will continue to persist.
“We are now seeing how we are coexisting with COVID-19. We have a worse hospital system that we have to deal with,” said Dr Parajoong. she said.
He said the best way to help hospitals is to get vaccinated.
“What we have to do is leverage vaccines, especially when new vaccines for COVID-19 come out,” said Dr. Parajohn. “Get the flu vaccine. If you’re over 60, talk to your doctor about getting the RSV vaccine.”
