When we noticed that “#rulesformen” was trending on Twitter (it’s now X), we couldn’t contain our curiosity and, as is often the case, after that hashtag I decided to take a look to see what kind of relationship advice they would give. Perhaps we were a little skeptical at first that we’d find any solid wisdom, but we thought we’d at least find some fun.
It was impossible to deny that as we sifted through the flood of tweets flooding into our computer monitors. The tweeters brought up some good points about relationships, dating, and love that are totally worth the attention of men, and in some cases even women. Sorry for doubting you, Twitterverse! (However, we also found some weird and absurd tweets. No wonder!)
Just in case you don’t have hours to scour your Twitter timeline for the most amazing relationship trivia, we decided to compile a list of our favorite tweets and clean them up in the grammar department. This is so you can enjoy it too. Apparently, we do, but, well, that’s what we’re here for, friends.
Here are the top 10 love rules for men extracted from Twitter:
1. “When you’re in a relationship, don’t act single.” – Walter
This rule should be self-explanatory, but it seems to confuse quite a few people.
2. “Don’t let a woman walk on the side of a car.” – Marina
Chivalry can live on. Just do something small.
3. “Act your age. Be an adult. She wants a man, not a little boy. (It’s okay to be stupid sometimes, but not always.) – Greg
Well said, Greg.
4. “Understand yourself and learn to distinguish between love, lust, possessiveness, revenge, and blind desire.” – Head Sync
Not all relationship feelings are true love or healthy. It’s important to recognize that.
5. “Don’t apologize unless you know why you’re apologizing. Girls can tell the difference and it makes things worse.” – Brooke
Men, there is no point in being sorry if a woman suspects infidelity.
6. “If you’re lost, don’t stop and ask for directions, no matter how many times a girl tells you to.” – ASuckerForAmor
what? ! OK, obviously boys will be boys.
7. “Don’t expect them to call you all the time. Phones go both ways.” – Chaz
I mean, at least some men know this…
8. “Don’t treat her any differently when you’re alone with her or with your friends.” – Angie
Again, it should be very obvious, but it’s not always the case. Make sure you have access to the right treatment 24/7.
9. “If you don’t plan on getting married, don’t spend more than two years dating her. Seriously, you’re wasting her time.” – Jasmine
Amen. On the other hand, ladies, if you want to get married and he doesn’t want to get married, move on.
10. “Don’t text women one-liners.” – Ernesto
Ladies, when you type a short, detailed text message to a guy and he replies with an OK or LOL, you know you want to destroy your phone. A little effort goes a long way. I’m glad Ernesto realized this.
