The study, led by PhD student Jonathan Dodd and Professor René Oudmayer, looked at the movement of stars over different time scales. When studying the universe, scientists group different types of stars based on similar properties. Be stars are a subset of B stars characterized by the presence of circumstellar disks, and like other B stars, Be stars were originally thought to exist in binary star systems. However, new research suggests that they are actually part of a triple star system. The Be star has long fascinated astronomers because of its unique disk of gas, which resembles Saturn’s rings. These stars, like much of the universe, have been known for about 150 years, but their origins remain a mystery. Prior to the triple star theory, a popular theory held that the gas disk was formed by the rapid rotation of a Be star, possibly caused by interaction with another star in a binary system.
